UPSC Interview Marks Out of 275: What Scores Really Mean
What is a good UPSC interview score? Explore the official marks structure, actual scores from UPSC's published results, and what the numbers mean for your final rank.

UPSC Interview Marks Out of 275: How Does the Scoring Work?
The UPSC Civil Services Personality Test carries 275 marks. These marks are added to your Mains written marks to determine your final merit position.
| Examination component | Maximum marks | Counts towards final rank? |
|---|---|---|
| Mains written papers counted for merit | 1,750 | Yes |
| Personality Test | 275 | Yes |
| Combined total | 2,025 | Yes |
| Preliminary examination | Screening stage | No |
The interview contributes approximately 13.6% of the final total. Its marks matter, but they form part of a combined assessment rather than a separate competition.
Is there a minimum qualifying mark in the UPSC interview?
No. UPSC does not prescribe minimum qualifying marks for the Personality Test. There is no separate interview pass mark.
A score must therefore be understood alongside your written marks. Neither an interview score nor a written score alone determines the final total.

What Does UPSC Actually Assess in the Personality Test?
The Personality Test assesses your personal suitability for a career in public service. UPSC describes it as a natural, directed and purposeful conversation rather than a strict cross-examination.
The official notice identifies seven qualities:
- Mental alertness.
- Critical powers of assimilation.
- Clear and logical exposition.
- Balance of judgement.
- Variety and depth of interest.
- Ability for social cohesion and leadership.
- Intellectual and moral integrity.
The interview is not intended to repeat the knowledge assessment already conducted through the written examination.
Does UPSC assign separate marks to each quality? No such individual marking breakdown is published. A formula claiming to divide 275 marks into fixed portions for these qualities should not be treated as official.
For preparation, this distinction is useful. Instead of memorising impressive phrases, practise explaining ideas clearly. Instead of attempting every question, recognise the limits of your knowledge. Instead of defending an opinion automatically, consider competing arguments.
The conversation should reveal your judgement and understanding, not your ability to reproduce rehearsed answers.

UPSC publishes the written marks, interview marks, combined totals and ranks of recommended candidates. These records allow us to examine actual outcomes without guessing how individual boards evaluate answers.
How many interview marks did AIR 1 score?
| CSE year | AIR 1 | Written /1,750 | Interview /275 | Total /2,025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Aditya Srivastava | 899 | 200 | 1,099 |
| 2024 | Shakti Dubey | 843 | 200 | 1,043 |
| 2025 | Anuj Agnihotri | 867 | 204 | 1,071 |
These results illustrate an important point: AIR 1 does not require the highest interview score. Written marks contribute substantially to the final total.
Highest UPSC interview marks in CSE 2025
The CSE 2025 final result recommended 958 candidates. UPSC published their marks on 10 March 2026.
| Measure | CSE 2025 result |
|---|---|
| Highest interview score | 225, AIR 62 |
| Lowest interview score among recommended candidates | 132, AIR 602 |
| Approximate mean | 184 |
| AIR 1 interview score | 204 |
The highest score of 225 out of 275 refers specifically to recommended candidates in CSE 2025. It should not be described as the highest UPSC interview score of all time.
The mean is calculated from the published list. These observations describe recommended candidates only, not everyone who appeared for the Personality Test.

How Much Marks in UPSC Interview Is Good?
This is a natural question, especially when published scores are discussed without their written-mark context.
There is no official UPSC definition of a good, excellent or exceptional interview score. However, the CSE 2025 marks distribution offers a useful reference point.
The following bands are editorial estimates by UPSC Gurus. They are based on the observed distribution among recommended candidates in CSE 2025. They are not official categories, qualifying marks, selection thresholds or predictions.
| Interview marks /275 | Editorial interpretation | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Below 170 | Below the observed mean | Not a failed interview. Recommended candidates also scored in this range. |
| 170 to 184 | Around or below the mean | Can contribute to a competitive final total with sufficient written marks. |
| 185 to 199 | Strong | Above the observed mean and can support the overall rank. |
| 200 to 214 | Very strong | A high contribution, including recent AIR 1 interview scores. |
| 215 and above | Exceptional | Notably high within the observed distribution, without guaranteeing any particular rank. |
Is 200 a good score in the UPSC interview?
In the context of CSE 2025, 200 was comfortably above the calculated mean of approximately 184. Recent AIR 1 candidates also received interview marks around 200.
That makes 200 a strong observed result, not an official benchmark or a score that guarantees selection.
These bands offer perspective after results. They should not become fixed targets during preparation. No published evidence establishes what score a particular board will award.
How Do UPSC Interview Marks Affect Your Final Rank?
The calculation is straightforward:
Final marks = Mains written marks + Personality Test marks.
A stronger interview performance can improve the combined total. However, a candidate with higher written marks can still finish ahead despite receiving fewer interview marks.
Worked examples: How the combined total changes
The following candidates are fictional. Their marks demonstrate the arithmetic, not predicted UPSC ranks.
| Candidate | Written marks | Interview marks | Final total |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 795 | 175 | 970 |
| B | 775 | 200 | 975 |
| C | 830 | 180 | 1,010 |
| D | 775 | 215 | 990 |
Compare A and B. Candidate B has 20 fewer written marks but earns 25 more interview marks. B finishes five marks ahead in the combined total.
Now compare C and D. Candidate D performs much better in the interview, yet Candidate C finishes 20 marks ahead because of the written score.
A real example from CSE 2025
The candidate ranked AIR 62 received 782 written marks and 225 interview marks, producing a final total of 1,007. This was the highest interview score among recommended candidates that year, but it did not produce AIR 1.
The lesson: interview marks can influence relative rank, but they cannot be understood independently of written marks. The extent of any rank movement also depends on the distribution of final totals in that examination cycle.
UPSC Interview Marks: Common Claims and What the Evidence Says
Several familiar statements about interview marks become less convincing when compared with published results and official rules.
- Claim: You need at least 200 marks to succeed. There is no separate qualifying mark. The CSE 2025 recommended list includes interview scores below 170, including a score of 132.
- Claim: The topper must have the highest interview marks. The recent AIR 1 scores were 200, 200 and 204. The highest interview score in CSE 2025 was 225, earned by AIR 62.
- Claim: One incorrect answer ruins the interview. UPSC assesses broader qualities of judgement, reasoning, integrity and communication. No published rule prescribes a fixed penalty for one incorrect answer.
- Claim: A mock interview score predicts the final UPSC score. No established relationship supports treating mock marks as a reliable prediction of actual UPSC marks.
- Claim: A high interview score guarantees a particular rank. Final merit depends on both written and interview marks. Even an exceptional interview score cannot determine rank independently.
It is also important to distinguish published marks from interpretations of those marks. UPSC publishes outcomes, but not the individual questions, the board’s reasoning or marks awarded separately for each assessed quality.
That distinction allows you to learn from the data without attributing motives or evaluation methods to a board.

What Should You Aim for Instead of a Particular Interview Score?
Marks are the outcome of an assessment. Preparation is the part you can actively shape.
Guranchal Ma’am’s approach at UPSC Gurus is to prepare thoroughly, remain flexible and respond to the actual question rather than delivering an answer prepared for a different question.
A practical method for improving your responses
- Listen before answering. Understand what the question asks. Notice whether it seeks a fact, an explanation, a judgement or your personal reasoning.
- Begin with a relevant response. Address the central question before introducing supporting details.
- Explain your reasoning. Connect your answer to sound reasons instead of relying on impressive expressions.
- Consider other perspectives. When an issue contains competing concerns, acknowledge them fairly and explain your judgement.
- Separate knowledge from assumptions. If you are uncertain, acknowledge the limitation rather than inventing information.
- Stay attentive and courteous. Engage with follow-up questions naturally instead of attempting to control the conversation through a memorised script.
Use mock conversations to observe these behaviours. Treat feedback as guidance for improvement rather than as a forecast of marks.
You can influence your preparation, clarity, listening, honesty and balance. You cannot determine the questions, the board’s composition, the conversation’s direction or the final score.
The most useful preparation question is therefore not simply how to reach 200 marks. It is how to become clearer, more thoughtful and more consistent in your responses.

Frequently asked questions
How many marks is the UPSC interview out of?
The UPSC Civil Services Personality Test carries 275 marks. These are added to the 1,750 marks available in the Mains written papers counted for merit, making a combined total of 2,025. Interview marks contribute approximately 13.6% of the final total.
What is the highest marks in UPSC interview?
Among the 958 recommended candidates in CSE 2025, the highest interview score was 225 out of 275, earned by AIR 62. This is the highest score in that published CSE 2025 list, not a claim about the highest score in UPSC history.
How much marks in UPSC interview is good?
There is no official good-score threshold. The calculated mean among CSE 2025 recommended candidates was approximately 184. UPSC Gurus interprets 185 to 199 as strong and 200 to 214 as very strong for that distribution. These are editorial estimates, not UPSC standards or selection guarantees.
Is there a minimum passing mark in the UPSC interview?
No. The UPSC Personality Test has no separate minimum qualifying marks. In CSE 2025, the lowest interview score among recommended candidates was 132. Final merit is determined by the combined written and Personality Test marks.
Can UPSC interview marks change your final rank?
Yes. Interview marks contribute directly to the combined total and can affect relative rank. However, a higher interview score does not automatically mean a higher final rank. Written marks matter substantially, and the extent of rank movement depends on the distribution of combined totals.
