Guranchal Ma’am
Sociology is the only discipline that studies society by refusing to take it for granted. That refusal — to accept the obvious, to question the familiar, to look for structure beneath the surface — is exactly the thinking the examination rewards. It is also what I teach.
A subject that prepares you for the examination and for the service.
Sociology is not studied. It is developed — through careful reading, rigorous writing, and the gradual ability to see structure where others see only surface.
Sociology Optional carries 500 marks: Paper I on Sociological Theory and Paper II on Indian Society. Few optionals offer its strategic advantage — a direct, compounding overlap with GS Paper I, the Essay paper and the Interview. Preparing Sociology well is preparing for several parts of the examination at once.
But the marks come from writing, not reading. The aspirant who can bring Weber, Durkheim or Ambedkar into a Paper II answer and make it feel organic, not borrowed, writes the answers that score. That integration is a skill, built through practice, evaluation and personal mentoring. That is exactly what this programme delivers.

The sociological lens you build here carries into every paper that follows.
Guranchal Ma’am
Founder, UPSC Gurus
- Alumna, Miranda House and the Delhi School of Economics
- Senior academic and management roles at Vision IAS, 2019 to 2024
- UGC NET, Economics and Sociology
- Over eight years of guiding UPSC aspirants
Sociology Optional is guided personally by Guranchal Ma’am
Sociology is Guranchal Ma’am’s own academic discipline. She is UGC NET qualified in the subject, studied at Miranda House and the Delhi School of Economics, held senior academic and management roles at Vision IAS, and has guided UPSC aspirants in Sociology for years. The free Sociology Optional course on the UPSC Gurus YouTube channel is taught by her.
Her focus is the step most aspirants find hardest: moving from knowing a thinker to using one. In your personal session after every test, she reads how you wrote, not only what you wrote, and shows how Paper I theory can carry naturally into Paper II, GS Paper I and the Essay.
The same session is a place to ask what is on your mind: which thinkers to read in depth, how to plan the syllabus alongside GS, or how to move forward after a difficult test.
How Sociology Optional is taught differently
Sociology is the subject where the gap between knowing and writing is widest. You can read Haralambos thoroughly and still score poorly, because the examination rewards application, integration and analytical clarity. Every component here builds exactly those capacities.
UPSC-standard papers
Every paper follows the actual pattern: Sections A and B, compulsory questions, 10-mark and 20-mark sub-parts, exactly as the examination sets them.
Model answers, always
Every test and every daily question comes with a model answer showing how theory and application come together in a high-scoring response.
Written evaluation
Specific feedback on conceptual clarity, theoretical integration, contemporary application, structure and language.
A personal session, every time
After every test and every active week, an online session with Guranchal Ma’am, who teaches the subject at depth.
Sociology is not just studied. It is developed.
The aspirant who writes consistently, receives honest evaluation and is guided personally arrives at the examination with something no crash course can give: genuine analytical clarity.
Watch before you write.
The complete Sociology Optional course and Guranchal Ma’am’s foundation series are on the UPSC Gurus YouTube channel — the same thinking that informs every test, every evaluation and every personal session in this programme.
Free, always. Begin here, and join the test series when you are ready to write.

Study Paper I and Paper II with Guranchal Ma’am, Founder, UPSC Gurus. Sociology is her own academic discipline, and the course moves the way she teaches it: from foundational concepts and thinkers to Indian society, to their use in GS Paper I and the Essay, and finally to the written answer.
Follow the syllabus in a clear sequence, return to any lecture as often as you need, work with downloadable notes and previous years’ questions, and bring your doubts to a live class with Guranchal Ma’am every month.
